With Norton Antivirus™ 2008 (NAV), Symantec adds new touches to a familiar face, keeping NAV atop our A-list. It can now scan your system for installation-stopping viruses before installation, instead of using the old DOS boot CD and a slow command line scanner. It also prescans at setup and scans within ZIP and other archive files by default.

Keeping up with the times, NAV now finds and removes spyware, adware, and dialers. Also new is protection for instant message–borne threats in Yahoo! Messenger, MSN/ Windows Messenger, and AIM. NAV performs automatic updates by default, and you get a system wide warning when your virus pattern files are out of date.

Spyware, adware, and dialers, while not technically viruses, are threats to your privacy and finances. Like McAfee VirusScan 8.0, NAV now scans and removes these threats. In our testing, NAV found most of our adware, though it missed some spyware and dialers and had difficulty removing others. Symantec claims that NAV will stop incoming spyware and adware received via instant messaging or e-mail but not from Web sites.

This version of NAV has improved default settings. The installation wizard walks you through the options, which include automatic updates, a full initial system scan, weekly system scans, and real-time scanning of compressed files. The status screen shows green, yellow, or red icons to indicate your protection level. In previous versions, if you let your updates lag, only the Update icon turns yellow or red. In NAV 2008, if you bypass an update, the program displays yellow and red icons across the board, indicating that auto-protection is out of gas.

                     Spybot Search and Destroy
Search your hard disk for so-called spybots or adbots, the modules that are responsible for showing ads and transmitting information back to vendors. If Spybot Search and Destroy finds such modules, it will remove them or replace them with empty dummies. In most cases, the host software still runs after removing the bot. Among the adbots Spybot targets: Aureate, CLPRS, Comet Cursors, eZula HotText, Gator, GoHip, Radiate, WebHancer, and WildTangent.

Fortunately, a Dutch student who goes simply by the name Merijn wrote a tiny free tool called CWShredder that specializes in removing dozens of CWS variants. Ewido Trojan Remover Although Ewido follows the traditional file scanner approach used by most other anti-trojans there's much to like about the way the product has been executed. If a trojan does manage to damage one of Ewido's components then Ewido will attempt to fix the problem by automatically downloading new versions of the corrupted modules. A very nice feature! Ewido unpacks compressed executables and scans them in a protected virtual environment. This allows it to detect trojans whose signatures would otherwise be hidden by the encoding. It also gives Ewido a chance to detect polymorphic trojans. Ewido also scans files inside conventional archives though unfortunately the documentation does not state what archive file types are supported. Ewido detects trojans that attempt to hide by attaching themselves to other programs, so called binded executables. HijackThis examines certain key areas of the Registry and Hard Drive and lists their contents. These are areas which are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers. It's up to you to decide what should be removed. Some items are perfectly fine. You should not remove them. Never remove everything. Doing that could leave you with missing items needed to run legitimate programs and add-ins. You will need to work with Experts to clean up your system using HijackThis.
